Summer Ice Hockey Update

Oldtimers Summer Hockey Heads to the Final Monday

Cue the highlight music.

After a summer of goals, bad bounces, good laughs, questionable line changes and bodies occasionally reminding us that we aren’t 25 anymore, the 50+ Oldtimers Summer Hockey season reaches its final Monday night at Crystal Fieldhouse.

And we’ve got two championship-side matchups worth watching:

Lukes Lawn vs. Flint Oldtimers
Antcliff vs. Family

Lukes and Family have been two of the strongest contenders all season, but getting to the final night wasn’t exactly uneventful.

Previously on Monday Night Hockey…

The first round on August 10 gave us three very different games.

Antcliff 3, MADD Dogs 0

Antcliff advanced behind a shutout from Edwin Dean, who won a strong goaltending matchup against Nick Robbins.

Dean and Robbins are both among the younger goalies in our rotation — relatively speaking, of course — and both are capable of taking over a game.

On this night, Dean and the Antcliff defense closed the door.

Flint Oldtimers 3, Gears Beer 1

The next game matched Chris Blachura in net for Gears Beer against Mike Orlando for Flint Oldtimers.

They’re different kinds of goalies.

Chris is the bigger physical presence and takes up plenty of net. Orlando isn’t quite as large, but anybody who has played against Mike knows what he brings:

He competes for every puck.

Flint got the better of the matchup, holding Gears Beer to one goal and earning its spot opposite Lukes.

Gears Beer had an up-and-down summer and unfortunately saved one of its down stretches for the finish.

There was, however, an important personnel issue.

Our star player Howie went on injured reserve after suffering an injury while sleeping.

Yes.

Sleeping.

No collision.

No slapshot off the ankle.

No heroic shot block.

Apparently, once you reach Oldtimers hockey, the injury report needs to cover not only games and practices but also the eight hours you’re supposed to be resting.

That’s tough to game-plan around.

And Then There Are the Veteran Goalies…

The other goaltending pairing featured Don Arndt and John Hackett, two of the more experienced members of our goalie fraternity.

Let’s just say the defensive game plan changes a little depending on who’s between the pipes.

When Dean, Robbins, Blachura or Orlando is back there, the instructions are pretty conventional:

Don’t screen your goalie. Let him see the shot.

With Don and John?

The defensemen occasionally become part of the equipment package.

Block one with a shin pad. Get a stick in the lane. Maybe accidentally stand in exactly the right place.

We call it team defense.

Don and John have been around long enough to understand the arrangement, and the rest of us understand something even more important:

Anybody willing to put on goalie gear and stand in front of pucks for a bunch of old hockey players deserves our appreciation.

Without goalies, we’re just a bunch of guys skating around passing a puck and arguing about whether it went in.

🚨 Now Comes the Final Monday

The top of the 50+ standings has been competitive all summer, with Lukes Lawn and Family establishing themselves as the teams everyone has been chasing.

Lukes finished the regular schedule on top at 9-1-2, while Family entered the postseason at 7-4-1.

Now the final round gives us:

Lukes Lawn vs. Flint Oldtimers

Lukes has been the team to beat.

They’re disciplined, they can score, and they’ve been remarkably consistent throughout the summer.

But Flint Oldtimers earned its way into this game and comes in after knocking off Gears Beer.

One more game.

One more chance to knock off the top dog.

Antcliff vs. Family

Family has been right near the top all year, while Antcliff has proven capable of making life miserable for anybody trying to score.

After shutting out MADD Dogs, Antcliff now gets one of the league’s strongest teams.

That should be a good one.

🍺 What Happened to Gears Beer?

Our Gears Beer squad showed flashes of being very good this summer.

Unfortunately, flashes might be the operative word.

We were streaky.

When things clicked, we could play with anybody. When they didn’t, well…

There was always beer afterward.

Losing Howie didn’t help, especially considering the unusually dangerous circumstances surrounding beds and sleeping.

We’ll be reviewing our offseason sleep-safety protocols.

📺 Meanwhile, the 60+ Gears Beer Team Just Kept Winning

The Wednesday 60+ Gears Beer-sponsored team had a considerably different summer.

That group was dominant.

Even after losing Howie for the last few games, Gears Beer continued winning and finished atop the four-team league.

The final standings had:

Gears Beer — 5-3-0, 10 points
Milnes Cheney — 4-3-1, 9 points
Rolls Mechanical — 3-4-1, 7 points
Tucker — 2-4-2, 6 points

In the final round, Gears Beer picked up another 4-2 victory over Tucker.

The other game ended in a 3-3 tie between Rolls and Milnes Cheney, but there was one individual performance worth putting on the highlight reel:

Jon Morengo scored all three Rolls goals for the hat trick.

Three goals. One player. One game.

That earns a stick tap.

And it was a fitting ending to a competitive 60+ summer season — good hockey, close games, and plenty of guys still proving they can put the puck in the net.

🍻 The Real Story of the Summer

We keep standings because we’re competitive.

We keep score because nobody wants to hear the other team claim they won when they didn’t.

And yes, we’d all rather win than lose.

But that’s not really why we’re still doing this.

The best part is walking into the rink every week, seeing the same guys, giving each other a little grief, strapping on the skates and playing what may still be the greatest exercise ever invented — ice hockey.

For an hour, we’re hockey players again.

We compete.

We chirp.

We blame the referees.

We solve several major world problems in the locker room.

And then we come back the following week and do it all again.

That’s Oldtimers Hockey.

🏒 Fall/Winter 50+ Registration Is Open

Now we get ready to do it again.

Registration is open for the upcoming 50+ Fall/Winter League at Crystal Fieldhouse.

And we’d like to make this one considerably bigger.

Our goal is to build the 50+ league to 10 or even 12 teams this winter.

Once we have the 50+ registration underway, we’ll open registration for the 60+ league, where our goal is six teams.

More teams.

More balanced competition.

More guys getting back on the ice.

And undoubtedly more material for future Oldtimers injury reports.

If you’ve been thinking about playing again, this is the time.

If you know somebody who used to play, send him the registration information.

If somebody says he’s too old?

Tell him we have a 60+ league.

Then tell him some of those guys are still pretty darn good.

Get registered. Tell an old teammate. And we’ll see you at the rink.

Prayers For Our Friend

Gentlemen and Ladies of our great hockey community. Yesterday we received sad news that Scott Taggert was diagnosed with late stage cancer. I’ve heard that it may be Pancreatic. Scott is at UM Ann Arbor getting treatment. Marc Morrison has been in communication with his wife. Marc is looking into setting up some fundraising events to help Scott with the extreme expenses he is certain to incur.

Please keep Scott and his family in your prayers.

Follow-up with your doctor if you have something going on. Especially that awful colonoscopy. It could save your life.

As a personal note, I can share my experience in 2021 with colon cancer. The surgery was way easier than the nose surgery I had years before to fix my deviated septum and open the airway. That one was brutal. The colon surgery had me in the hospital for about two days. The chemo after was for six months and that was rough. Like Scott, I’m self employed and my savings was wiped out and credit cards maxed as I spent over $27,000 out of pocket to fight the good fight. I’m happy I was able to do that and continue to monitor for the return of the dreaded cancer.

This battle will be huge for Scott and his family. We need to rally around and help in any way we can. Scott is one of those guys who is always there to help out the hockey community. He and Joey are ever present at the rink for our games. I can’t imagine the rink without their presence.

Keep your head up,

Flint-Area Adult Hockey Update: Summer League Stretch Run and Friday 50+ Drop-In

The Flint-area adult hockey season is moving into an important stretch, with Monday and Wednesday league teams battling for position and summer schedules shifting around rink activity.

Monday League Enters the Final Stretch

Monday hockey is now down to the final five games of the season. June 15 was a position round, which means the schedule is starting to reflect where teams stand and what they are playing for.

No games on July 6th.

Wednesday League Pauses Until July 8

Wednesday league games are on pause until July 8 because of Powers Youth Hockey Camp activity. That gives teams a short reset before the final five games of the season.

Breaks can help or hurt depending on the team. Some players welcome the rest. Others would rather keep skating and stay sharp. When play resumes, teams will need to get back into rhythm quickly.

Gears Beer vs Rolls Mechanical Should Be a Strong Matchup

When Wednesday hockey returns on July 8, one of the games to watch is Gears Beer vs Rolls Mechanical.

Rolls Mechanical has been playing well and, as the saying goes, has been on a roll. Gears Beer has been strong defensively, allowing only 7 goals against in Wednesday league play. That sets up an interesting matchup between a confident opponent and a team that has done a good job keeping pucks out of the net.

Defense Still Matters in Adult Hockey

It is easy to focus on goals, but defense is often what separates teams late in the season. Strong defensive play gives a team a chance every night, even when the offense is quiet.

Good adult hockey defense is not just about the defensemen. It includes backchecking forwards, smart line changes, good communication, and goalies who keep the team steady. When a team has only allowed 7 goals in four games, everyone is usually doing their part.

Friday 50+ Drop-In Hockey Now Starts at 1 PM

For the summer, Friday 50+ drop-in hockey is now at 1 PM.

We have been getting 18-20 skaters and two goalies the last couple of Fridays. It was fun to have Bobby, Beth and their son Gavin out skating with us last week. Gavin is just 15 and plays for Grand Blanc. Bobby is Jim Devine’s step son, who ran the Wednesday afternoon skate for years.

Stick Tap for Shaggy at 87

The Oldtimers hockey community sends a big stick tap to goalie Shaggy, who turned 87 years old on Saturday.

That is something special. Hockey has a way of keeping people young, but it also takes commitment, toughness, and love for the game to keep showing up year after year. Shaggy is a great reminder of what this hockey community is all about.

Summer Hockey Is Heating Up

With only five games left in both Monday and Wednesday league play, the rest of the summer should be competitive. Teams are chasing points, building momentum, and trying to be at their best when it matters most.

Whether you are playing, watching, or just following the standings, Flint-area adult hockey has a strong finish ahead.

2026 FOT Tournament

Congratulations to the Champions!

The Flint Oldtimers Tournament is a long-standing tradition that draws teams for some fun competition.

The 40+ championship game was between two stacked teams, many of which play in the EHL on Sunday mornings. Maddens lost a close one to Rouse Outdoors in fast paced game.

Two divisions of 50+ players competed over the weekend. In the East Division, local goalie Nick Robbins assembled an all star cast from the Monday 50 league as well as the EHL. They earned the Championship over Demarcos. In the 50 West, Tailgaters beat Wolf Pack from Port Huron for the Championship.

The 60+ Division this year was created from players primarily from the 50 Monday league. Marc Morrison’s Madd Dogs was the only undefeated team Saturday afternoon until they met up with the Flint Oldtimers team. The two teams met in the Championship game and lost in a shootout.

Round three is the final series between the top two teams, March 23rd, 30th and April 6th.

60 League Playoffs

No games this week due to the Senior Olympics tournament. Playoffs begin on March 11th with Rolls vs Tucker and Flint Oldtimers vs Saber.

Notice the adjustment in the standings. Head-to-head is rated above goal differential in our bylaws, so I had to tweak the standings to move Saber up above Tucker. We will try to fix that, among other items, in the next fall season.

2025 League Finals Results

The results are in and it was a barn burner last night as Saber Electric worked hard to stop the run by Gears Beer Hockey.

The game remained scoreless until 24:49 when  coach Dave Crabill tapped in a goal from a feed by John Gerrish, assisted by Brian Mullin.

The back-and-forth play continued until 3:53 when Joe Nesbit received a feed into the offensive zone from Steve Malenich and squeaked a puck past Mike Davis against the post.

The game remained tied through a five-minute overtime and the goalies stopped all but one shooter – Jamie Galant beat Edwin Dean for the win!
