The Flint-area adult hockey season is moving into an important stretch, with Monday and Wednesday league teams battling for position and summer schedules shifting around rink activity.
Monday League Enters the Final Stretch
Monday hockey is now down to the final five games of the season. June 15 was a position round, which means the schedule is starting to reflect where teams stand and what they are playing for.
No games on July 6th.
Wednesday League Pauses Until July 8
Wednesday league games are on pause until July 8 because of Powers Youth Hockey Camp activity. That gives teams a short reset before the final five games of the season.
Breaks can help or hurt depending on the team. Some players welcome the rest. Others would rather keep skating and stay sharp. When play resumes, teams will need to get back into rhythm quickly.
Gears Beer vs Rolls Mechanical Should Be a Strong Matchup
When Wednesday hockey returns on July 8, one of the games to watch is Gears Beer vs Rolls Mechanical.
Rolls Mechanical has been playing well and, as the saying goes, has been on a roll. Gears Beer has been strong defensively, allowing only 7 goals against in Wednesday league play. That sets up an interesting matchup between a confident opponent and a team that has done a good job keeping pucks out of the net.
Defense Still Matters in Adult Hockey
It is easy to focus on goals, but defense is often what separates teams late in the season. Strong defensive play gives a team a chance every night, even when the offense is quiet.
Good adult hockey defense is not just about the defensemen. It includes backchecking forwards, smart line changes, good communication, and goalies who keep the team steady. When a team has only allowed 7 goals in four games, everyone is usually doing their part.
Friday 50+ Drop-In Hockey Now Starts at 1 PM
For the summer, Friday 50+ drop-in hockey is now at 1 PM.
We have been getting 18-20 skaters and two goalies the last couple of Fridays. It was fun to have Bobby, Beth and their son Gavin out skating with us last week. Gavin is just 15 and plays for Grand Blanc. Bobby is Jim Devine’s step son, who ran the Wednesday afternoon skate for years.
Stick Tap for Shaggy at 87
The Oldtimers hockey community sends a big stick tap to goalie Shaggy, who turned 87 years old on Saturday.
That is something special. Hockey has a way of keeping people young, but it also takes commitment, toughness, and love for the game to keep showing up year after year. Shaggy is a great reminder of what this hockey community is all about.
Summer Hockey Is Heating Up
With only five games left in both Monday and Wednesday league play, the rest of the summer should be competitive. Teams are chasing points, building momentum, and trying to be at their best when it matters most.
