2025 Senior Olympics

Many decades of on-ice experience were displayed last week at the 2025 Michigan Senior Olympics. Many, many decades!

Two teams came out of Crystal Fieldhouse, a 60+ and a 70+ team. Some players from our barn were scattered amongst other teams, notably JB and Bill on the Lansing 70 and Garrettson and Edwards on a 60 Elite.

60+ Team

Chris Burkland, Darren Long, Jerry Briand, Lenny Koskisan, Mike Howard, Mike DiCosola, Mike Gorney, Mike Petty, Scott Poliskey, Steve Seres, Mike Huey, John Fiacca, Mike Rutherford, Dave Crabill, Mike Petty and Mike Davis in net.

A loss and a tie each day wasn’t enough to make it to the final rounds. Big fun had by all.

2025 Playoff Series

PLAYOFF MADNESS BEGINS: A GUIDE TO PLAYOFFS

As the regular season wraps up with Gears Beer (25 points) claiming the top spot, it’s time to break down our league’s distinctive playoff format that sets us apart from typical beer leagues.

PLAYOFF FORMAT BREAKDOWN:

ROUND 1 – THE QUARTERFINALS (Total Goals Series)
• Two-game series where total goals determine the winner
• Unique Goalie Rotation System:
– Same goalie pair works both games
– Goalies switch teams after Game 1 for complete fairness
– This eliminates any goalie advantage/disadvantage
• All eight qualifying teams participate
• Matchups follow standard 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 format

What makes our playoff format special is the emphasis on fairness, particularly with our goalie rotation system. Since we’re a draft league where goalies are managed separately from teams, this system ensures that goaltending can’t unfairly influence a series outcome. Each team gets to play with both goalies, creating a pure test of team skill.

ROUND 2 – THE SEMIFINALS
• Best 2-out-of-3 series format
• Winners advance to championship

Goalies are drafted by teams in the order of their ranking for the second round of playoffs and the goalie stays with the team through the remainder of the playoffs.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
• Best 2-out-of-3 format
• Winner takes all!

QUARTERFINAL MATCHUPS:
1) Gears Beer (25pts) vs Madd Dogs (19pts)
2) Goyette (24pts) vs Lukes Lawn (20pts)
3) Milnes (23pts) vs Flint OT (21pts)
4) Saber Electric (23pts) vs Tucker (22pts)

The transition from total goals in round one to best-of-three series adds another layer of strategy. Teams must adapt their approach – from managing goal differential in the quarterfinals to winning individual games in the semis and finals.

Stay tuned for game schedules and results as we crown our 2024/25 champion!

Summer Season Playoffs Recap: Family Physical Therapy Advances to the Championship!

The summer season is winding down, and the excitement is heating up as we head into the final week of the playoffs. The camaraderie, banter, and fierce competition that define our league were on full display during the first round of playoff games on Monday, September 12th.

Family Physical Therapy vs. Goyette: Redemption & Rivalry

In a thrilling rematch, Family Physical Therapy, who finished the regular season in third place, took on the second-place team, Goyette. Just a week prior, these two teams faced off in the last regular season game, where Family Physical Therapy mounted an impressive comeback but ultimately fell short with a 4-5 loss.

This time around, the stakes were higher, and Family Physical Therapy came out with something to prove. From the opening faceoff, they kept relentless pressure on Goyette, showcasing the grit and determination that have defined their season. The final score was a decisive 9-2 victory in favor of Family Physical Therapy, securing their spot in the championship game.

The intensity of the match boiled over in the final moments, leading to some frustration on Goyette’s part. Darren Long was ejected after an altercation with our goalie following a whistle, and Tim Doucette was tossed for complaining about the call. Referee Andrew, known for his no-nonsense approach, didn’t hesitate to lay down the law, issuing game misconducts to both players.

Antcliff vs. Rolls Mechanical: The Powerhouse Prevails

In another playoff clash, the first-place team, Antcliff, faced off against Rolls Mechanical, who finished the regular season in fourth place. Antcliff demonstrated why they were the top team all season, controlling the game from start to finish and securing a dominant 5-0 victory. Rolls Mechanical put up a valiant effort, but Antcliff’s depth and skill were too much to overcome.

Tucker vs. Farm Bureau: A Battle of the Underdogs

In a showdown between the 5th and 6th place teams, Tucker delivered a surprising performance, defeating Farm Bureau with a commanding 10-4 win. Tucker, the underdog coming into the playoffs, showed they have plenty of fight left and will be looking to carry that momentum into their next game.

Upcoming Championship Night: Monday, September 19th

The stage is set for an unforgettable championship night on Monday, September 19th:

  • 7:15 PM: Antcliff (1st) vs. Family Physical Therapy (3rd) – The Championship Game!
  • 8:15 PM: Goyette (2nd) vs. Tucker (6th) – Consolation Game
  • 9:15 PM: Rolls Mechanical (4th) vs. Farm Bureau (5th) – Consolation Game

Make sure to come out and support your favorite teams as we wrap up another incredible summer season. The championship game between Antcliff and Family Physical Therapy promises to be a nail-biter, with both teams eager to claim the coveted title.

Whether you’re playing, cheering, or simply enjoying the camaraderie, we look forward to seeing everyone at the rink for one last hurrah this summer!

Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, keep the fun, laughter, and friendly banter going strong!

2024 Flint Lapeer Oldtimers Hockey Tournament Rules & Regulations

Format

1) The tournament format will be round robin, with the results used to seed teams into a

single elimination bracket. During round robin play, teams will earn points based on the following formula:

REGULATION WIN = 3 points.

SHOOTOUT WIN = 2 points

SHOOTOUT LOSS = 1 point

Seeding for finals will be based on total points.

Ties for seeding after pool play will be broken on the following basis:

 a) Head-to-head competition.

b) Goal differential (Total goals for less total goals against. A higher number is better). Within Division

  • Goals for.
  • Goals against.
  •  Coin toss.

c) In a division of six, the top team of each bracket will advance to the finals.

d) All points and goal differentials for all games will be used. (Including crossover games)

2) Games shall consist of two periods of 16 minutes stop-time.

3) Teams will not switch ends during any games

  • A shootout during pool play will consist of three rounds. The team that scores the most goals wins. If tied after three rounds the shootout shall continue in one round increments.  The home team decides the order in which the teams shoot.  Shootouts will end once one team has secured a guaranteed victory (such as leading 2-0 in a three-round shootout after two rounds).

3a) A player that is serving a penalty or misconduct at the end of the game is ineligible to shoot in the shootout. The only exception being a player that is serving a minor penalty for a player issued a misconduct, the player serving the minor is eligible to shoot. However, a

player serving a bench minor or a penalty for goalie is not eligible.

3b) Every eligible player on the roster must shoot before a player can shoot a second time. 5c) Once every eligible player for one team has shot, both teams may start recycling players.

3c) Teams must report to the official scorer and/or referee any player who is injured and unable to participate in the shootout.  Such a report cannot be reversed. Once a report is made that player is considered ineligible for the shootout.

3d) If a player is injured during the course of the shootout they must report the injury immediately to the official scorer to be deemed ineligible.

  • During a shootout the puck must be continually moving forward, the shooter may not play the puck until the referee blows his whistle, and the goaltender may not leave his crease prior to the shooter playing the puck.
  • Any game resulting in a shootout will result with one goal being added to the winning team’s score regardless of the number of goals scored in the shootout. For example, a game that enters a shootout tied 2-2 will result in a final score of 3-2.  That 3rd goal will count when tabulating total goals for and total goals against.

Sport Rules

  1. This tournament will be conducted in accordance with USA Hockey rules, except as modified herein. For a copy of these rules, please call USA Hockey at  (719) 576-8724 or visit www.usahockey.com.
  2. Slap shots are permitted. However, at no time will sticks be permitted above the knee. The penalty shall be a face-off in the violating team’s end.
  3. Checking is not permitted. Any player who intentionally pushes, shoves, checks or fails to avoid body contact with an opponent shall be assessed a 2-minute penalty.
  4. USA Hockey or CAHA approved helmets are required for all players. Full protective equipment is mandatory. Facemasks are strongly recommended.   5. Penalties will be assessed as follows: Minor-2 minutes; Major-5 minutes;

Misconduct -10 minutes. Any player receiving a total of four penalties in one game will be ejected from that game. Any player receiving 2 ten-minute misconduct penalties in one game will be issued an automatic game misconduct. Fighting will result in an automatic disqualification from the tournament. Any combination of 3 major penalties and/or misconducts will result in disqualification from the tournament. If the scoreboard allows penalties will stop running during run time play.

  • Any game misconduct penalty will incur an automatic 1 game suspension. The tournament director may waive or increase this suspension at their discretion.
  • The center red line will not be enforced for two-line passes.
  • Each team shall be granted one 30-second timeout per game.
  • Team jerseys must be of like design and color. Other uniform clothing should be of like design and color. Teams are encouraged to have one colored and one white jersey. The home team shall have the primary choice of jersey color should both teams have similar colors. Uniforms shall be free of inappropriate symbols or wording; the tournament director shall have final say on whether or not content is deemed to be inappropriate. Examples are anything that promotes or endorses any illegal activities and profanity/racial slurs.
  • Verbal abuse of officials is prohibited.  The tournament director may, at their discretion, issue a suspension for verbal abuse of an official (including off ice officials such as scorekeepers, goal judges, arena staff, and tournament staff), even if there was no penalty called on the ice.
  • If any player makes intentional physical contact with an official (including off ice officials such as scorekeepers, goal judges, arena staff, and tournament staff), in an unsportsmanlike manner an immediate expulsion from the tournament.
